“Aging in place” and universal design are hot topics in the remodeling space. Homeowners are choosing to remain in their homes longer and make adjustments to the space to accommodate their changing needs as they get older. Additionally, remodelers are planning for their clients’ future needs and following universal design practices as they implement current-day projects.
Many think of the bathroom as the first place universal design elements are needed, which is a key location to update. Installing shower seats, non-slip flooring and low- to no-barrier shower entries are small but impactful changes that allow a current bathroom to be used if the homeowner’s mobility needs change down the road.
Other universal design options include stair lifts, ramps, wider hallways and grab bars. There are numerous products on the market today that combine both functionality with aesthetics; for example, masking a grab bar inside a designed toilet paper holder or shower fixture.
