Michael Isherwood, Owner of Sagent Builders in Westchester, details a recent master bathroom remodel in the latest NARI of Greater Chicagoland Project Spotlight!
Sagent Builders was called in to explore options for a new master bathroom layout that would better suit the client’s needs. With the existing bathroom at just under 100 sq ft, Isherwood had more than enough space to work with. The client’s current shower imposed many safety concerns with poor lighting, very small footprint, and the location made it very difficult to enter the shower stall safely.
In the new design, Isherwood removed a large soaking tub and raised deck to make way for a large walk-in shower that offered assist bars in two locations – at the entrance to the shower and another bar by the seat of the bench. A handheld shower with a separate control was also added. The new shower door was made considerably wider, giving the client the option of having a caregiver assist her if the needed. With safety as top priority, Isherwood also used a low-profile shower base with a 3/4″ curb.
This project stands out for three reasons:
- It helped make the client more independent knowing she could move around with less risk of falling when using the shower.
- The new layout provided enough space to create a hall pantry closet to serve as additional storage for her kitchen.
- The vanity was designed at a lower height to better suit the needs of the client.
